The City of Cape Town is concerned about the increasing rate of drunk driving after 108 motorists have been arrested in the past week.
Traffic officers recorded 60 drunk driving cases, along with two for reckless and negligent driving and 14 for other offences.
Officers also impounded 176 public transport vehicles and executed 1,392 warrants of arrest.
Metro police and law enforcement made a further 48 arrests for driving while intoxicated, bringing the total to 108.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has welcomed the deployment of 71 road safety ambassadors across five regions to boost road safety.
The Road Safety Ambassador Programme was introduced in response to a rise in pedestrian fatalities, especially along high-risk corridors in the metro and surrounding areas.
DA Western Cape Mobility Spokesperson Nomafrench Mbombo said that the initiative aims to save lives while creating jobs.
"By placing more trained ambassadors in high-risk areas, we are making our roads safer while putting food on the table. Practical action that protects communities and creates dignity."
More than R3 million has been spent since the programme’s launch in the 2024/25 financial year to protect lives and support communities.
