The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) said that drinking and driving is not a mistake but a conscious decision to endanger the lives of others.

This is after 214 motorists were arrested between 20 and 26 April.

Spokesperson Xolani Fihla said that despite ongoing warnings and educational campaigns, the number of arrests due to drunken driving remains high.

He added that motorists who are guilty treat the lives of others as an afterthought.

"The JMPD will continue to increase visibility and enforce strict strategies across all regions. We urge residents to use alternative transport or appoint designated drivers when consuming alcohol. Road safety is a shared responsibility."
