After three years under business rescue, the South African Post Office (SAPO) is preparing to be handed back to its board and shareholders.
However, the entity warns that its future is entirely dependent on securing the funding necessary to remain sustainable once the rescue process concludes.
This restructuring period has already seen a significant overhaul of the business, including thousands of retrenchments.
The Post Office briefed Parliament’s Communications and Digital Technologies Committee on Thursday about its Annual Performance Plan.
SAPO has been under business rescue since July 2023 following years of documented mismanagement.
The process has been led by joint practitioners Anoosh Rooplal and Juanito Damons, who are expected to step away from the entity in due course.
Acting CEO Fatima Gani emphasized that funding remains the key dependence for the post-business rescue phase. She noted that the entity’s current performance plan assumes a business operating independently of the rescue practitioners.
"The business rescue team is transitioning out of their roles. We’re working towards a state of readiness to hand the business back to the board of directors and the shareholder," Gani stated.
To ensure long-term viability, SAPO plans to leverage its remaining assets and modernize its operations. The company intends to monetise its extensive property holdings as part of the turnaround plan.
Additionally, SAPO will pivot away from the traditional post office model in favour of a technology-led model designed to meet modern market demands.
