Suspended South African Police Service (SAPS) district commissioner Abraham Nkhwashu is the latest top cop to admit he attended parties at the infamous White House on the Hill - a boutique hotel in Northcliff, Johannesburg.

The venue is infamous for being the preferred location for meetings between senior police officials and private individuals, allegedly to influence outcomes of criminal investigations.

The White House on the Hill has featured prominently at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, with at least two officers having testified that highly sensitive investigations were discussed in the presence of civilians.

Testifying before the commission on Wednesday, Nkhwashu said he has been to the white house several times strictly for social purposes.

“The gatherings at the white house were ordinarily arranged by colleagues or Major General Richard Shibiri (head of organised crime at SAPS).

“To the best of my knowledge, the purpose of these gatherings was very innocent and was very lawful, according to me. It was, ordinarily, to bring camaraderie, which is a friendship and close relationship and to distress, after work with officers from different units.”
