The Pretoria Magistrates Court has granted an application by corruption-accused businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala to remain at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre.
Matlala is facing multiple charges linked to an allegedly irregular R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) tender awarded in 2024 and appeared in court again on Monday.
Earlier in 2026, he was transferred to the Ebongweni super-max facility but returned to Pretoria for court proceedings.
Matlala’s legal team argued that keeping him at Kgosi Mampuru would allow for easier consultation ahead of trial - a submission the court agreed with.

The State alleges Matlala and his co-accused used front companies and falsified documents to secure the lucrative police contract.
Defence lawyers have previously indicated they will challenge some of the State’s evidence, while also seeking more time to prepare.
The State, however, is pushing for a trial date, arguing that further delays should be avoided.
The matter is expected to involve extensive financial records and multiple witnesses, which could impact timelines.
Matlala’s legal team is also expected to bring a further application on his detention conditions as the case moves closer to trial.
