The eThekwini Metro Municipality is gearing up for a significant tourism surge, with officials expecting over a million visitors to descend upon the city this Easter weekend.

During a safety campaign briefing at City Hall on Sunday, Mayor Cyril Xaba outlined the city's readiness for the holiday period. While a large portion of travellers are expected to arrive for religious observances, the city is also targeting a broad demographic of both domestic and international tourists.

Mayor Xaba emphasised that the long weekend serves as a critical catalyst for the local economy.

“Injecting a direct spend of about R2,650,433,672 into the city’s economy. Average accommodation occupancy is expected to be around 62%, while the creation of employment opportunities is estimated at 16,000,” Xaba stated.

The safety briefing underscored the municipality's commitment to ensuring a secure environment for the anticipated crowds at beaches, religious sites, and tourist hubs across the metro.
