An overnight raid has resulted in the arrest of several police officials who allegedly assisted controversial businessman Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala to score an irregular R360 million tender from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The raids were conducted by the Investigative Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).

Twelve police officials have been nabbed and are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Wednesday on fraud and corruption charges.

In June 2024, SAPS awarded Medicare24 Tshwane District a R360 million tender for the provision of medical services for its officers.

Medicare24 is owned by Matlala.

However, about a year later, the tender was cancelled following an internal audit report that found irregularities in the bidding process.

The Madlanga Commission has heard evidence of how senior police officials assisted Matlala to secure the tender in exchange for kickbacks.

Some of those officials have been arrested and are expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
