The Cape Town Regional Court has ordered that a man convicted of rape, kidnapping, and attempted murder be listed on the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The 48-year-old, whose name has been withheld to protect his young children, was found guilty of assaulting his partner.

He has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Nicolette Bell has condemned the brutal gender-based violence (GBV), saying the perpetrator inflicted abuse on a woman he claimed to love, someone he was supposed to protect.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the man’s name has been withheld to protect his minor children.

"The court has ordered these particulars to be included in the National Register for Sex Offenders and declared him unfit to possess a firearm."

In her victim impact statement, the partner said she will never forget the abuse and continues to suffer trauma.

The NPA said it remains committed to the fight against GBV and femicide.
