SA Weather Service warns of countrywide cold snap

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is warning of cold, wet and windy conditions across most parts of the country from Friday until Monday.

The conditions will start in the Western and Northern Cape before spreading to the central and eastern parts, including Gauteng, over the weekend.

Forecasters warn that the change in weather could lead to localised flooding, slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Coastal areas are also expected to experience rough seas.

Meanwhile, for inland areas, daytime temperatures are set to drop significantly, with strong winds forecast.

“The public is advised to take the following precautionary measures: dress warmly and ensure adequate heating in homes. Use heating devices safely to avoid fire hazards. Exercise caution when travelling on wet and slippery roads.

“Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall. Secure loose outdoor objects that may be affected by strong winds. Stay away from the coastline during rough sea conditions," explained forecaster Tokelo Chiloane.

The public is being urged to remain alert and monitor official weather warnings.
