Following a violent incident at Windermere High School in Kensington, reports suggested the altercation may have involved racial elements.

Three learners were injured in a stabbing incident when a brawl involving two groups of learners erupted on Wednesday.

Ward Councillor Cheslyn Steenberg explained that it was not an isolated incident, but a symptom of a broader issue, a lack of focus on cultural diversity and sensitivity in the education system.

“We need to understand that South Africa has a very diverse society. We can’t tell other people, people that aren’t born in a particular community, that they’re not welcome here.”

Steenberg said he will meet with community members to activate support systems and ensure safe passage for everyone.

He highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of violence, particularly among young men.

"How young men deal with conflict, how young men deal with their emotions, how young men resolve conflicts. That's the bottom line of this."
