Gauteng's water crisis is deepening as Rand Water reduces high consumption municipalities, including Johannesburg and Tshwane.

The entity said water consumption in these two metros is placing a strain on the infrastructure and forcing it to operate under pressure.

This reduction comes days after residents of Midrand and parts of Tshwane were left without water when the system failed following a leak.

Rand Water said it is particularly concerned about abnormally high consumption levels in Johannesburg and Tshwane, with usage exceeding allocated levels.

The bulk water supplier said its system is severely strained and the supply will be reduced to stabilise the network.

It’s not yet clear if residents could face further water outages.

Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo said they are meeting with municipalities to chart a way forward.

“We urge all customers and consumers to use water sparingly. We strongly encourage all high-water-consuming municipalities to implement water-saving measures to help reduce demand and protect system stability.”

Recent water disruptions triggered protests in Midrand and parts of Tshwane, go out on the streets in protests.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Water said supply in Midrand remains constrained, with some towers on bypass.
