A police officer was reportedly wounded on Sunday after a firearm discharged inside the Johannesburg City Hall during a gathering involving scholar transport operators, according to an eyewitness.

The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

The meeting followed intensified efforts from the provincial government to enforce compliance and challenges faced by operators in the sector.

The incident occurred after more operators than anticipated arrived at the meeting. As those outside tried to get in, additional heavily armed police were called to the scene.

The witness told Eyewitness News that the firearm discharged while a police officer was handling it inside the building.

The weapon allegedly went off accidentally when one officer handed it to another, resulting in the officer being shot in the shoulder.

The injured officer was removed from the scene shortly after the incident.
