South Africans urged to consume alcohol responsibly during Easter
The Drinks Federation of South Africa is cautioning South Africans to trade and consume alcohol responsibly over the Easter long weekend.
The federation notes that growing financial pressure on households this month may be a driver of the illicit alcohol trade.
It said research by Euromonitor International suggests increasing economic instability may further lead to the sale of counterfeit products at significantly lower prices.
The federation's Dr Shamal Ramesar is urging consumers to purchase from reputable outlets only.
He warns that counterfeit products may have been diluted or tampered with.
"With rising cost pressures, cheaper alcohol may seem appealing, but that lower price can come at serious risks to your health and your safety."
Ramesar is also cautioning sellers to check the IDs of young buyers.
"Traders are reminded to check IDs and never sell alcohol to anyone under 18. Remember, responsible choices matter, and responsible celebrations help secure the future of our communities."
