A state witness on Monday told the Western Cape High Court he played a pivotal role in the distribution of contraband for underworld figures, including slain "steroid king" Brian Wainstein.

The witness, who remains anonymous for his safety, is being cross-examined in the trial of Jerome "Donkie" Booysen and 11 others related to Wainstein's murder in 2017.

Alleged underworld figures Mark Lifman and Andre Naude were both on trial with Booysen before being assassinated.

A Section 204 witness, who can only be identified as "Mr X," today told the court he was in charge of distributing illegal steroids on behalf of Brian Wainstein.

Mr X says he had more than one thousand clients spread across the Western Cape, Johannesburg, and abroad.

He told the court he transported money from the proceeds to a courier shop in Green Point, which was allegedly owned by alleged gang boss Ralph Stanfield.

Defence attorney for Jerome Booysen, Advocate Amanda Nel, questioned Mr X about why he left certain details out of his statements to police.

"So you agree that in paragraph one, your real involvement or the totality of your involvement was not disclosed at that stage," Nel asked.

Mr X told the court he had lots of information to share, and investigators were still trying to figure out how to process all of it.
