Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said a new South African Revenue Service (SARS) Commissioner would be appointed by the end of February.
He said a panel was reviewing candidates to replace Edward Kieswetter, who is due to step down.
Legal professional and former judge president of the Competition Appeal Court, Judge Dennis Davis, highlighted the need for someone with institutional knowledge and independence to take over the role.
This makes internal appointments more likely, with a potential candidate in Deputy Commissioner Johnstone Makhubu, he added.
“You are looking for someone who understands the business and someone who is fiercely independent, and who can run a serious, large organisation, and has a vision for where they should take it.”
He noted that SARS has made significant strides in recent years, and its integrity is crucial for the country’s financial stability.
