The credibility of the state's key witness in the high-profile trial related to the murder of "Steroid King" Brian Wainstein was tested on Monday in the Western Cape High Court.

The witness—who remains anonymous to protect his identity—has been testifying against alleged underworld figures Jerome "Donkie" Booysen and 11 others.

Booysen and his co-accused face 36 charges for various crimes, including the murder of Wainstein in August 2017.

Defence attorney for Jerome Booysen, Advocate Amanda Nel, on Monday accused a Section 204 witness—who can only be identified as "Mr X"—of being a liar.

Nel is cross-examining Mr X about statements he gave investigators implicating Booysen in the murder of Brian Wainstein.

Mr X previously testified to being in charge of Wainstein's security before being recruited by Booysen to murder the illegal steroid merchant.

Nel questioned Mr X about his motives related to Wainstein's murder:

"A self-serving motive. I put it to you, and this is where I'm going to, that you would lie either to protect yourself or for financial gain."

The matter will be back in court tomorrow.
