Thobakgale joined Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald in Parliament on Tuesday to brief the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services regarding the state of facilities in the province. The briefing follows a string of recent incidents, including deaths at Goodwood Prison and the alleged escape of an inmate from the Pollsmoor Correctional Centre.

During the session, Thobakgale faced rigorous questioning regarding various allegations of corruption at the two facilities. The Commissioner committed to personally investigating these reports to ensure accountability.

Beyond administrative failures, Thobakgale highlighted the systemic pressure caused by organised crime within the prison walls.

"The gang activity in the Western Cape requires special attention, given the incidents that we are seeing in our correctional facilities," Thobakgale stated.

The Commissioner noted that gangsterism continues to present prison officials with significant operational challenges. He confirmed that he is currently reviewing internal reports from both Goodwood and Pollsmoor to determine the exact level of action required to stabilise the facilities and ensure the safety of both staff and inmates.
