The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is ready to legally defend itself against a possible court application by attempted murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is seeking to be transferred back to a Gauteng-based prison.
Matlala was recently moved from the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria to the eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Facility in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal.
The DCS maintains that the transfer followed a comprehensive risk and threat assessment.
Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, DCS officials defended the decision to transfer Matlala to the super-maximum facility.
“We are open to engaging Cat Matlala’s lawyers on consultations. We are also open to engaging with the National Prosecution Authority on how we can work together to ensure that Matlala appears in court on time.”
