Additional rescuers from the National Disaster Management Centre arrived in Limpopo on Friday to support ongoing search-and-recovery operations for five people still missing after severe flooding.

Relentless rains have battered parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, prompting the government to declare a national disaster. At least 19 lives have been lost so far, with roads submerged, bridges collapsed, and schools severely affected.

Disaster management spokesperson Tsakani Baloyi welcomed the extra support, saying it will strengthen efforts to locate missing residents and assist communities impacted by the floods.

The provincial Disaster Management Centre, in collaboration with other stakeholders, has been working around the clock to locate missing residents and provide relief to communities affected by recent floods in Limpopo.

Baloyi also acknowledged the vital support of humanitarian organisations and urged the public and donors to continue assisting flood-affected residents across the province.

“Government recognises the trauma that the affected families are going through and assures them that, with the additional team of rescuers added, their  loved ones will be found so that there can be closure.”

Residents are being urged to stay vigilant and follow safety advice as heavy rains are set to continue to affect the province.
