Vanderbijlpark crash: Police arrest 22-year-old driver of minibus taxi

The 22-year-old scholar transport driver involved in the fatal Vanderbijlpark crash is expected to appear at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court within the next 48 hours.
The crash, which claimed the lives of 12 learners, involved a minibus taxi and a side tipper truck on Fred Droste Road near the N1.
He faces 12 counts of culpable homicide.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said he was arrested after being discharged from hospital, following the crash.
"The police have arrested the 22-year-old scholar transport driver who was involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 12 learners in Vanderbijlpark. He was arrested after he was discharged from hospital."
Masondo also confirmed that one learner has been discharged from hospital while four others remain in the hospital.
"After the police visited the hospitals and mortuary to verify the number of fatalities and injuries. It can be confirmed that 12 learners died the accident scene and 5 were taken to the nearest hospitals for medical treatment and one has since been discharged."
