Controversy in False Bay: Vice Admiral Monde Lobese investigated over Iranian naval participation

The South African Navy Chief is reportedly in hot water over Iran’s participation in naval drills, which allegedly occurred contrary to a direct order from President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The Sunday Times reports that Vice Admiral Monde Lobese is at the centre of this controversy, which is now the subject of a formal investigation.

Lobese allegedly disregarded a specific instruction from President Ramaphosa for Iran to withdraw from the "Exercise Will for Peace" drills held in False Bay, southeast of Cape Town.

Despite the executive directive, the participation proceeded, leading to the current disciplinary crisis.

On Friday, Defence Minister Angie Motshekga released a statement clarifying that the instruction regarding Iran’s participation in the naval exercise was communicated to all parties concerned and was formally agreed upon. However, reports persist that the Navy Chief is expected to face repercussions from President Ramaphosa for the failure to execute the withdrawal.

To resolve the matter, Minister Motshekga has established a Board of Inquiry to establish whether the President's instruction was misrepresented or intentionally ignored. This board has been mandated to complete its investigation within a seven-day period.

"The board of inquiry has been given seven days to complete its investigation."

While the focus remains on the Navy Chief, the City Press is reporting that Minister Motshekga is also on thin ice, as her own control over the military is currently being investigated.
