Four suspected criminals were shot and killed this afternoon following a violent confrontation with police in Woodlands, south of Durban.
The shootout is the fourth deadly incident involving police officers and suspects in KwaZulu-Natal since the beginning of the year.
According to preliminary reports, the fatalities occurred during a high-stakes exchange of gunfire. In addition to those killed, three more suspects were arrested at the scene. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that a manhunt is currently underway for additional suspects who fled the area during the chaos.
Police top brass are reportedly en route to the scene to oversee the investigation. Further details regarding the identity of the suspects and the nature of the crimes leading to the shootout are expected to be released shortly.
