A public fallout is playing out between the chair of the CRL Rights Commission and the chair of its committee mandated with the regulation of Christian churches.

Reverend Musa Xulu has announced his resignation from the Section 22 Committee.

The committee was set to address abuses and harmful practices within the Christian community.

The relationship between reverend Musa Xulu and CRL Chair Thoko Mkhwanazi Xaluva has soured, and he has decided to step down from the Section 22 committee that Mkhwanazi Xaluva appointed him to chair.

Xulu claimed he was blindsided and that what was in his appointment letter, which stated that he would conduct research on the Christian church self-regulating, differed from the terms of reference that he was made to present at the committee’s launch.

Reverend Xulu, who presented alongside other religious leaders on Thursday, said he believed the Christian church does not need to be regulated by the state.

He has distanced himself from a draft framework that will ultimately make its way before parliament saying he does not believe the proposed legislation of the church will pass.
