Recent high rainfall in Limpopo has caused flooded roads and submerged bridges, leaving many residents trapped and unable to access various other services, with the Mopani and Vhembe districts among the worst affected.
Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) MEC, Basikopo Makamu, said they are facing many challenges.
"A lot of infrastructure damage... be it schools, be it roads, be it electricity facilities."
Makamu said thankfully those who were trapped have been safely rescued.
"Our teams for disaster relief are already on the ground trying to assist everywhere."
The CoGHSTA MEC says a request for a local state of disaster to be declared has already been submitted, but that more help is likely needed.
"We are going to look at getting the province classified as a state of disaster... bridges, roads are swept away."
He said they are working closely with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) in order to be better prepared, and ensure that residents are kept safe.
