The ANC's 16th Regional Elective Conference in Johannesburg, currently underway in Sandton, has been overshadowed by serious allegations of patronage and the use of money to influence the outcome of the party's leadership election.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula confirmed that these allegations have emerged, though he stressed that no evidence has been presented to substantiate them.

"There are such allegations but they are not proven anywhere. There is a contest but it’s peaceful."

Speakers at the conference, including outgoing Regional Chairperson Dada Morero and Provincial Leader Panyaza Lesufi, have issued strong warnings to members against attempting to bribe delegates.

Outgoing ANC regional leader Dada Morero echoed these concerns, cautioning delegates about the consequences of accepting bribes:

"Being bought for a vote means you participated in a transactional agreement that is not progressive nor developmental. If this is not you, you will return the money. If this is you, enjoy the money and we hope you sleep well at night."

Mbalula specifically urged voting delegates to avoid accepting money in exchange for supporting any candidate. He noted that the allegations have surfaced over the past two days of the conference.

The conference is running behind schedule. Voting for the new leadership, which was expected to commence later tonight, will elect new leaders, with Loyiso Masuku facing off against Dada Morero for the position of Regional Chairperson.
