The chief of staff to on special leave Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu said that he is in the “same WhatsApp group” with KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in the fight against police interference.
Cedric Nkabinde said this is the reason his fallout with Mkhwanazi has left him emotional because they both resisted what he calls the “capture” of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Independent Police Investigative Directive (IPID).

He told Parliament's Ad Hoc committee investigating police corruption on Wednesday that the interference was by individuals like forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan, who he said was “in charge” of police operations.
Nkabinde told the committee that he had a close relationship with Mkhwanazi and was on the same side in fighting police interference.
He said O’Sullivan basically ran IPID and other law enforcement structures and dockets that involve him are gathering dust in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
“He’s running SAPS and he’s running the National Prosecuting Authority. You know what Mkhwnazi is reporting, about state capture - this is the real state capture.”
He said his fallout with Mkhwanazi since the directive to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) by Mchunu has affected him.
“When you talk about this thing, I become very emotional about what is happening between me and Mkhwanazi because I was fighting this with him. Me and Mkhwanazi are one WhatsApp group. Maybe I’m in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Nkabinde also distanced himself from Mchunu’s directive to disband the PKTT, denying any involvement.
