The Public Servants’ Association (PSA) has raised concerns about the safety of correctional officials following a violent stabbing at Pollsmoor Prison.
Two officials were injured in last week’s attack, which also claimed the lives of three offenders.
The association said one of the injured officials has since been discharged from the hospital.
PSA’s Aileen Mosetic said gangs inside and outside prisons are closely linked and are operating together.
"The offenders just attacked our officials with knives, and we're not aware of any particular reason why they attacked officials at that time, but they do make their own plans and decide who and when to attack. It was just a plan made by themselves, the gang activity. Even though it's taking place in the prisons, the same gangs are operating on the outside.” Mosetic said.
