Western Cape MEC for Education David Maynier on Tuesday mentioned the province's excellent matric results for 2024 during a review of its annual reports in the provincial legislature.
The Standing Committee on Education in the provincial legislature deliberated on the Western Cape Education Department (WCED)’s latest annual reports.
Maynier told the committee many of the department's toughest decisions were spurred by budget constraints.
Maynier reminded the committee in the provincial legislature that the province achieved its highest matric pass rate in 2024.
"There's a lot in our annual report and a lot in our year under review to celebrate. Not least, our excellent matric results in 2024, where we gained our highest matric pass rate ever."
Maynier said the WCED faced significant budget constraints, which required tough decisions.
"Because of those tough decisions, the department remains stable and, importantly, during the year under review, has managed to maintain its support to vulnerable learners."
Maynier said the WCED also invested more to improve learning outcomes and build more schools in the province.
