The taxi industry in the Western Cape is showing signs of calm while extraordinary measures remain in place to compel feuding operators to broker peace.

The Western Cape High Court upheld the provincial administration's decision to suspend several routes connecting Khayelitsha to the Somerset West CBD.

The routes were shut down for 30 days following escalating violence between rival taxi associations, CATA and CODETA.

Both the industry and the provincial government are now urging cooperation to restore stability.

The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) has welcomed the ruling and remains committed to finding a peaceful and long-lasting solution to challenges in the local taxi industry.

The group is urging members to avoid violence for the safety of commuters, drivers, and industry colleagues.

Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku said that only one incident was reported since measures were implemented in September.

"At the end of the 30 days, we have to go back and reassess what is happening. Were we able to achieve stability in the industry and then we make a determination on what else can be done from our side."

Sileku added that ultimately, the long-term solution to curbing taxi violence would be for operators to work with each other and the province's transport authority.
