The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane has submitted a motion of no confidence in Deputy Mayor Eugene Modise, accusing him of doing business with the municipality.
Modise, who is also the finance MMC, is currently under investigation for possible conflict of interest with one of the city’s service providers, Triotic Protection Services.
Modise has previously admitted to owning the company; however, he said he resigned as its director prior to becoming a Tshwane councillor in 2023.
The DA's regional caucus leader, Cilliers Brink, has accused Mayor Nasiphi Moya of protecting her deputy.
"In terms of the code of conduct for councillors, a councillor of a municipality cannot have benefits, interests in a contract with a municipality. If that rule applies to ordinary councillors, it applies all the more to the deputy mayor and the finance MMC, who has an important role in the budget process, oversight over tenders and is meant to drive the city’s financial recovery."
