Management at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape has suspended all operations following a violent student protest.
The administration and student affairs buildings were set on fire on Wednesday.
The protest was sparked by the university’s plans to appoint an interim SRC during amendments to the student governance constitution.
Students are also calling for vice-chancellor, Sakhela Buhlungu, to resign, accusing him of failing to deal with alleged mismanagement at the institution.
In a statement released by the university late on Wednesday night, it states that the few students engaged in the recent protest were not adhering to the interim court order issued by the Bhisho High Court, which prohibits such acts.
Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela said he had requested a de-escalation plan from the university to ensure the protection of lives and campus infrastructure.
Management said it was left with no choice but to take drastic measures to restore calm on campus.
Students have been given until 5pm on Thursday to vacate the university’s premises.
