Fire contained on ninth floor of Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, investigation underway

Firefighters have managed to extinguish a fire that broke out at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Parktown, Johannesburg, on Monday afternoon.

The blaze ripped through a ward on the ninth floor at the facility, with no deaths or injuries reported and no major disruptions to overall hospital services.

Emergency Service teams said the cause of the fire is still unclear at this stage, as is the full extent of the damage.

Ward 196 on the ninth floor at the hospital has been closed off as a clean-up operation is underway.

Security personnel are keeping a close guard of the entrance to the ward.

Patients have also been relocated to other wards, and all beds have been removed from the affected area.

While the hospital continues to operate as normal, a full report is expected on what happened and how much damage has been done.
