Three suspects have been killed during a shootout with police in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria.
The confrontation happened after members of the highway patrol, working with private security, acted on intelligence regarding a group of suspects involved in multiple hijackings around the area.
The suspects were spotted travelling in a car matching the description provided by intelligence.
Police said that when officers attempted to stop the car, the suspects refused and a high-speed chase ensued.
Spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the suspects then opened fire on the police, who retaliated, resulting in the death of three, while two others sustained injuries.
"Three unlicensed firearms with ammunition signal jammers, hand gloves and balaclavas, including the vehicle, were confiscated. Police investigations are underway."
