Pietermaritzburg freak crash: Fifth victim succumbs to injuries in hospital

The death toll following an accident involving a scholar transport vehicle in Imbali township in Pietermaritzburg has increased.
A fifth pupil succumbed to her injuries in hospital this morning.
Last week, the taxi transporting learners to school crashed into a tree before veering into a pre-school classroom.
The Kwazulu-Natal Department of Transport revealed that a grade 10 pupil, Nomalanga Ndawonde, died on Friday while being treated for a severe brain injury.
The department’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said they are assisting the families affected by this tragedy.
“We were nursing hope that she was going to survive and rejoin her grade 9 classmates at Zibukezulu High School. Sadly, she has left us. We are in touch with the Ndawonde family and this morning we expressed our deepest condolences to the family.”
