JOHANNESBURG - Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya has entered into a payment plan to repay the almost R270,000 she was "overpaid" by the municipality back in 2019.

In 2019, Moya was one of 78 senior officials in the city who erroneously received upward salary adjustments.

At the time, Moya was working as the chief of staff to then-mayor Stevens Mokgalapa.

In 2018, the Tshwane Municipality was reclassified from Category A grade nine to Category A grade ten, adjusting the salaries of senior managers in the city upwards.

In 2019, Moya received a lump sum of R268,000 due to the reclassification.

However, the city later conducted a benchmarking exercise which concluded it had overpaid 78 of its senior managers, including Moya.

In a letter to the Democratic Alliance (DA), Moya said she was made aware of her debt in July 2024, four years after she resigned from her post.

Despite her debt being prescribed, Moya has committed to making monthly repayments.

The DA's Jacqui Uys: "It is unfortunate, Mayor Moya had to be prompted to do what is right, instead of setting an example of her own accord."

This is the second time Moya has paid back the municipality.

In 2020, the mayor was paid a R10,000 subsistence and travel allowance for a trip to Saudi Arabia, which was later cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
