JOHANNESBURG - The section 174 discharge application by some of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial is set to be heard in the Pretoria High Court on Monday morning.

In July, the State wrapped up its case after two years of leading evidence.

It’s now the defence’s turn to make its case.

Five men are being tried for the 2014 murder of the football star in Vosloorus, in the east of Johannesburg.

When proceedings were halted earlier in August, it was only the fourth accused, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, who was certain that he would be proceeding with the section 174 discharge application.

This is an application that’s brought only if the defence believes there is no real evidence against the accused for conviction and, thus, no case to answer.

On Monday morning, the court will hear arguments for Maphisa’s discharge application, which the State plans to oppose.

If any of the other accused also plan on making a discharge application, they, too, will make their arguments on Monday.
