CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police have opened a case of attempted murder and another of attempted hijacking following an attack on three Democratic Alliance (DA) MPs.
On Tuesday, the three members of Parliament were conducting a police oversight visit in Philippi when the vehicle they were travelling in was pelted with rocks.
Parliament's police committee chairperson, Ian Cameron and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) member, Nicholas Gotsell, both sustained injuries to their faces and heads as a result of the incident.
MP Lisa Schickerling was also in the vehicle at the time.
DA chief whip in Parliament, George Michalakis, said they would continue calling for more policing resources in areas, including Philippi.
"The fact that three MPs could be attacked in the way that they were today is just a symptom of what the communities, such as that of Philippi, face every single day and we call on the minister of police to again ensure that policing in such areas receive priority."
