ActionSA’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate Xolani Khumalo has officially been sworn in as a councillor in the metro.

The party said the move is aimed at giving Khumalo, a political novice, much needed governance experience ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

The party recently fired two of its Ekurhuleni councillors for poor performance.

These two vacancies were filled by Khumalo and his fellow party member Gavin Siti.

They were sworn in at the city’s council chambers in Germiston.

Khumalo said he is looking forward to representing the people of Ekurhuleni in council.

“The reason why this opportunity was presented to me is because of my track record and the work that I have done not because I know how council works or I know certain policies that are in the municipality. But if other people can do it then so can I. There is living proof of things being possible, our president Baba (Herman) Mashaba had zero [experience] in mayorship work but he managed to do it.”
