JOHANNESBURG - An education activist is urging the government and parents to intervene and restore peace at schools.
Hendrick Makaneta said schools are meant to foster a safe environment where young people can be nurtured.
The call comes after a principal and several learners at Hoërskool Rooderpoort, west of Johannesburg, were injured in a stabbing incident.
The incident linked to a clash between learners from Hoërskool Roodepoort and West Ridge High School flared up on Monday, after a fight last Friday went viral on social media.
Makaneta said the learners who are responsible for this incident should be held accountable.
“A principal’s role is to lead, guide, and protect, not to bleed on the school grounds they serve. That this principal was injured while attempting to prevent further violence speaks volumes about her courage and commitment.”
