JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA’s Joburg leader, Nobuhle Mthembu, has resigned from the party with immediate effect.

In a letter to the party’s leadership, Mthembu said that her decision was driven by internal dynamics and concerning behaviour within the organisation.

Her resignation comes shortly after she was removed as council Speaker through a motion of no confidence.

Nobuhle Mthembu was appointed regional leader of ActionSA in Johannesburg last year.

Soon after, she was elected Speaker of council, with the support of the African National Congress (ANC)-led coalition.

However, relations between the two parties broke down in June after ActionSA refused to back a motion of no confidence against Mayor Dada Morero.

In response, the ANC supported a motion to remove Mthembu as the Speaker of council.

In her resignation letter to ActionSA, Mthembu expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s decision-making processes, citing a lack of transparency, open dialogue, and internal democracy.

"However, after careful consideration, I have come to realise that the party's internal dynamics and decision-making processes no longer align with my values or the interests of the constituency I represent. I firmly believe that organisations must foster open discussions, transparency, and democracy. Despite our efforts to address these concerns, meaningful change has not been," said Mthembu.

She added: "Forthcoming as a result, I have decided that it is in the best interest of both me and the constituency I represent to part ways with the party. This marks the end of my association with ActionSA."

Her resignation is effective immediately.
