The head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Andrea Johnson, has defended the arrest of Crime Intelligence boss, Dumisani Khumalo.
She said that Khumalo’s arrest by IDAC investigators was not "dramatic", dismissing claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhanhla Mkhwanazi, who questioned the arrest, calling it a project to destabilise organised crime investigations.
Johnson was responding to questions from evidence leader, Norman Arendse, about Crime Intelligence and the arrest before the ad hoc committee investigating police corruption.
Khumalo was arrested, along with six co-accused, on charges of fraud and corruption linked to the appointment of 30-year-old Dineo Mokwele to an executive position within Crime Intelligence despite having no policing experience.
Mkhwanazi had questioned his arrest for what he said was essentially an HR matter.
Mkhwanazi also described the arrest of Khumalo as being dramatic.
But Johnson said that this was not the case.
"And I do recall that General Mkhwanazi indicated there was a dramatic arrest. There was no dramatic arrest. There were just two IDAC investigators; they approached him, spoke to him and he went with them to the car."
Johnson said that the arrests of Khumalo and his co-accused were justified because they made misrepresentations about Mokwele’s skills and experience for the job.
