CAPE TOWN - With the deployment of 37 newly trained gender-based violence (GBV) ambassadors across the Cape Metro East, under-resourced communities are set to receive better support and awareness around GBV issues.

The ambassadors will reportedly be stationed in areas such as Kraaifontein, Khayelitsha, Eersteriver, Mfuleni, and Somerset West.

They form part of a wider effort that has already seen 320 ambassadors deployed to help GBV survivors access support, services, and justice.

Founder of the Callas Foundation Caroline Peters said the programme brings vital services closer to those who need them most.

“This program can help shift community responses to abuse and bring services closer to the ground., Ultimately, justice for survivors goes beyond court. It's about the safety, the healing, the dignity, and access to long-term support.”

Peters added that reducing secondary trauma for survivors is critical.

“This program is a step forward, but it must be part of a bigger, coordinated effort across sectors to truly shift the tide of gender-based violence.”
