Black Sash receives influx of calls from concerned SASSA grant recipients

CAPE TOWN - Human rights organisation Black Sash said it’s received an influx of calls from concerned grant recipients.
This comes after the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) announced it would be pausing the grant payouts of beneficiaries under review or investigation for having possible undisclosed amounts of money.

Grant recipients all over the country have been queuing outside SASSA offices with documents in hand to prove their eligibility.
Recipients have until the end of July to declare any form of extra income.
The spokesperson for Black Sash, Oliver Meths, said SASSA needs to improve their methods of communication.
“What we are witnessing on the ground is a surge in complaints from beneficiaries who have been cut off without any clear explanation or notification. Our community-based monitoring teams, who are at the different SASSA payment sites across the country, have been overwhelmed with distressing calls from, particularly the elderly people.”
