CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) is taking stock of the performance of its provincial executive in the Western Cape to rebuild the organisation, as it prepares for a local government election in a province where the party is at its weakest.

Its National Working Committee (NWC) is currently meeting in Cape Town to discuss regional reports, after several days of engaging with structures on the ground.

On Saturday, President Cyril Ramaphosa spent the day in a closed-door community meeting in Paarl to get to the heart of the party’s problems in the Boland region.

In 2021, the ANC’s electoral performance in municipal elections in the Western Cape slipped even further, to just more than 20% from 26% in 2016.

After being under administration for several years, a new provincial executive was elected in 2023.

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said the party is discussing how it can strengthen its position as a viable alternative for governance in the Western Cape.

"This is our fifth province we are visiting which is to look at, in the main, the state of the organisation, and how to address the challenges the comrades are faced with, and to strengthen the anc in the Western Cape."
