JOHANNESBURG – Eighty-seven percent (87%) of public schools in Gauteng do not have internet connectivity.

The Education Department and e-government have revealed that only 260 out of 2,059 public schools have internet in the province when answering questions in the legislature.

The basic education department is obligated, through norms and standards, to supply internet to schools as a means to enhance communication.

The rules were published in 2013, and the department was expected to provide internet connectivity to all schools by 2020, which it has failed to do.

Gauteng DA spokesperson for e-government, Michael Waters, is calling for reform in this regard.

“Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s government is denying our children access to information and digital skills by not connecting the internet to schools. The DA Gauteng demands that Premier Lesufi’s intervention ensures faster connectivity.”
