CAPE TOWN - Gun Free South Africa said a systemic failure to control the proliferation of firearms is to blame for a recent flare-up of gang-related shootings in Mitchells Plain.
Seven people were shot dead in separate incidents of suspected gang violence in the area since Thursday last week.

Gun Free South Africa director Stanley Maphosa said easy access to firearms is fuelling violence in communities.
"These guns that are called illegal come from legal sources - be they manufacturers, be they police officers, be they security officers."
Maphosa said when guns are present, conflicts turn deadly.
"We urgently need stronger enforcement of the Firearms Control Act. We also need community disarmament efforts and real investment in violence prevention in this country."
