JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Community Safety in Tshwane said it would conduct its own investigation parallel to the court case of three municipal workers accused of stealing a transformer worth R7 million.

Police said one more suspect was still being sought in the case.

The three Tshwane employees aged between 40 and 50 appeared at the Atteridgeville Magistrates Court on Wednesday for the first time.

They are facing a charge of theft of essential infrastructure.

While the court case will play out on Friday, the MMC for Community Safety said internal checks are taking place to determine exactly what happened.

The case initially involved 11 suspects, 10 of whom are contractors.

Charges were withdrawn against 10, and one employed by the city remains in custody.

Community Safety MMC Hannes Coetzee said, “We will do a follow-up of what happened on the site, we will also make sure that consequence management is taken care of. We are busy with the process of ensuring we are factual in everything we say.”

He said the city takes consequence management seriously.
