CAPE TOWN - Two of the biggest taxi associations in the Cape, Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) have finally found common ground over disputed taxi routes.
The two taxi organisations have been embroiled in a deadly conflict over routes from Mfuleni and Khayelitsha to Somerset West.
This led to the death of at least eight taxi operators from both CATA and CODETA in the past few weeks.

After a series of meetings between CATA and CODETA, an agreement on route operations has finally been reached.
At a meeting held earlier on Tuesday, the two rival taxi associations have agreed that operators from Mfuleni can transport passengers to and from Somerset West.
The two also agreed that each association will bring 15 minibus taxis each to operate between Khayelitsha and Somerset on an interim basis.
Operations on the Khayelitsha to Somerset West route will be monitored and reviewed in three months’ time.
Taxi umbrella body SANTACO (South African National Taxi Council) in the Western Cape has welcomed the outcomes of the engagements.
