JOHANNESBURG - Tshwane mayoral committee member, Tshegofatso Mashabela, has announced that the city will not issue health certificates to stores that are incorrectly zoned.

Mashabela made this statement during the city's weekly Reclaim Our City operation on Friday, where law enforcement checked the compliance of food and alcohol outlets.

Health certificates are granted only after thorough inspections of building safety and working conditions.

Mashabela said many non-compliant stores currently hold industrial zoning certificates meant for warehouses when they should have commercial zoning for retail shops.

"In terms of housing and zoning, that is special planning [department] that needs to come here and ensure that the place is zoned according to the norms and standards of the city so that when we come as health, we have our own separate portion, but here we do not have the zoning certificate hence we say that they are not in any condition to have our health certificate."
