DURBAN - The African National Congress (ANC) and its alliance partners in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) have welcomed the disbandment of the political task team and have called for an investigation into the task team.
The team which was tasked with investigating political killings was dissolved by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu two weeks ago.
Mchunu said the unit no longer served any purpose in the police service.
The ANC, Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), South African Communist Party (SACP), and the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in KZN have expressed similar views.
Despite the task team making breakthroughs in some of the major political murder cases in KZN, the ANC in the province said the disbandment was a good move.
On Wednesday, the party and alliance partners briefed journalists about their recent meeting.
SACP provincial secretary, Themba Mthembu, said that some of the alleged corruption in the task team was questionable.
"We were always saying there is a third force in this thing and now we are being proved correct, which is raising questions about the killing of others."
They called on the police to thoroughly investigate the task team.
